who is Mr. Green Jeans?
some rhymey commercial just now reminded me of this. our preacher will talk about “Mr. Green Jeans” every now and then in a reference to an earlier time (before i was born, i’m guessing). i always turn around and mouth “who?” to his wife, and she always responds with, “i have no idea,” and just shakes her head. their 4 kids bow their heads in embarrassment. it’s fun for me.
but anyway, who is that?

He was a regular character on the kids show Captain Kangaroo.
March 23rd, 2006 at 4:46 pmnot before you were born, my dear, since i have a very vague recollection of mr. green jeans, and i’m younger than you!
March 23rd, 2006 at 4:52 pmNot all of us Texans get PBS, y’all…
You have to have cable here to get it outta Houston.

March 23rd, 2006 at 5:32 pmOh poo, I am officially old. :( Follow Harvey’s link… but I knew exactly who Mr. Green Jeans was…. Right away. ::sigh::
March 23rd, 2006 at 6:18 pmI loved Mr. Green Jeans. But Moose was my favorite.
March 23rd, 2006 at 7:21 pmThe talking clock was my personal favorite.
March 23rd, 2006 at 9:35 pmOh my, I now know I am OLD! How sad you didn’t get to enjoy Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans! Poor, deprived child! What’s worse, is I know Bikermommy watched it, and I can’t believe she hasn’t enlightened you! It’s almost Un-American to say you don’t know who Mr. Greenjeans is! You’re breaking my heart!! :-)
March 23rd, 2006 at 11:42 pmMy favorite part on that show were the tiny little people who lived behind the books in the bookcase. Anyone remember them??
March 24th, 2006 at 8:59 amPing pong balls!!!! Not know the Captain??? Saaad. But then again I would get few of the Hoowdy Doody references so why should I expect young whipper-snappers to get Captain Kangeroo?
March 24th, 2006 at 12:00 pmOh, and Captain Kangeroo was on CBS not PBS.
March 24th, 2006 at 12:03 pmLoved the Captain and Mr. Green Jeans!
March 24th, 2006 at 1:13 pmWasn’t the rabbit puppet always obsessing about carrots? Seems like the rabbit was always scheming to get hold of carrots and dump ping-pong balls on the Captain. It was a kids show so Mr. Green Jeans couldn’t blast the rabbit with a shotgun.
Mr. Green Jeans was ‘Rooster’ to Captain Kangaroo’s Beretta - if that helps Sara…
March 24th, 2006 at 2:40 pmit’s funny, i never watched Captain Kangaroo, not once. (nor Beretta.)
March 24th, 2006 at 2:52 pm“Never watched Captain Kangaroo”…Well, no..you probably wouldn’t have, not being born yet and all. Nor Buffalo Bob and Howdy-Doo-dee. Certainly not the original Mickey Mouse Club. You really did miss a lot. Those were great shows for kids. And a lot of good educational stuff. And believe it or not, they actually talked to kids as if they had some brains and common sense. They were never condescending. Most “kiddy” shows today are very condescending to kids. That’s why I don’t think any are as popular as those shows “back then”. But you surely remember Mr. Rogers. Another great. Last of it’s kind.
March 24th, 2006 at 8:48 pmSarah, Are you getting the message that maybe you are the ONLY one in America that doesn’t know who Captain Kangaroo is? hehe Soooo Sadddd!!
March 26th, 2006 at 11:46 pmI actually owned a pair of green jeans just so I could be like Mr. GreenJeans. I loved Mr. Moose, too, and Grandfather Clock. Captain Kangaroo was the bestest evah, and I loved that show with all my heart when I was a wee chickie.
I cried when I heard that Bob K died… and I was well into adulthood when that happened. He was an integral part of my very early childhood memories.
Pingpong balls forEVAH!!!
