Is there anyone else out there (besides me) who doesn’t like “Starry, Starry Night”, no matter who is singing it? Vincent can keep his theme to himself, as far as I’m concerned.
I never could stand that song, all the way back to my teenage years in the 70s. It’s nearly as obnoxious as “Honey” and “Taxi.” Blech!
Technically, the title of that song is “Vincent”, and please, it’s nowhere as treacly as “Honey” or faux-insightful as “Taxi”. I’ve never had much use for cover versions of classics (or even bubblegum: Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” is positively cringe-inducing), which helps explain why I’ve never made it through single minute of American Idol. Write your own song and sing it yourself, or you may as well be Britney.
Anyway, “American Pie” is the first LP record album (remember those? of course not, you young whippersnappers!) I ever bought, while Christmas shopping in 1971. I’ve always been a sucker for a good melody with ambiguous/indecipherable/incomprehensible lyrics. But Don McLean’s next album was the last of his ever bought, so at least I learned quickly in those days.
